Vampire perfume recs?
For 3 pieces of vampire media:
Jane Gaskell's The Shiny Narrow Grin -- Prada Candy! ("[...] caramel accord with warm benzoin resin inside a cloud of white musk.") But mostly I think the heroine probably smells like hairspray and soap.
Simon Raven's Doctors Wear Scarlet -- Penhaligon Hammam Bouquet (lavender, rose, sandalwood) or Tom Ford Tobacco Oud. (Again. I just really love and really hate Tobacco Oud.)
The Lost Boys (1987)-- in honor of Star, Coty Wild Musk Patchouli Blend or something else extremely musk-y, I know that girl smells very good but I also know that she also smells like hairspray. For a modern perfume, Nemat International's amber oil. Honorary mention of Sixteen92's wonderful Death By Stereo!.
So many of my fave vampire-y perfumes are indies :
BPAL Penny Dreadful ("Soft perfume evocative of noir heroines over rich red grave loam")
BPAL Othello ("Arabian musk with two roses and a bevy of Middle Eastern and Indian spices")
Sixteen92 Pyromancy ("Green cardamom, fireplace embers, agarwood, smoked tea, white tobacco, hearth smoke")
Whisper Sisters 1984 ("clove bud, sweet clove, vanilla bourbon, tonka bean, burnt sugar, aged red cedar, dark musk, myrrh")
Whisper Sisters Detroit ("smoky incense, spicy musk, cannabis, patchouli, Egyptian musk, clove" -- Mira, you specifically need to check out Whisper Sisters' scents because they rule.)
But my bulletproof vampire perfumes are the canonical BPAL Only Lovers Left Alive perfumes, which frankly I ended up loving a lot more than the actual movie. I own Ian ("shaggy leather, sweet rum absolute, and patchouli") and Adam ("black leather, pale sandalwood, ambergris accord, and the memory of a long-lost Victorian fougère. His internal life seems to be reflected in his lair, so his perfume also possesses the scent of the wood of his guitars, the rosin from his violin bow, the musty wool of neglected Oriental carpets, the plastic, metal, and magnetic tape of his reel-to-reel, the dust that permeates everything.") and to my regret they're both so good. IIRC they were both either gifts from @allthestoriescantbelies or she introduced me to them so they have a lot of really affectionate feeling attached to them on top of good smells + cute guys.

Read This if You’re Curious About The Results Of The War On Drugs
Have you ever wondered where America’s-for lack of better terms-obsession with drugs came from? If not, have you at least become curious as to why the American government felt the sudden need to tirelessly advocate against drug use? The vast world wide web presents endless information on the nation’s War on Drugs; including how it came about, the effects it has had on our country, and where we are now. Yet, many of these website’s explain this information through wordy articles that are sometimes difficult to follow or simply downright boring. Chelsey Chats presents to all willing readers the ins and outs concerning the War on Drugs, it’s ramifications, and what this information means, in simple terms. Let us begin.
Drugs have not always been viewed as harmful, taboo, and negatively life altering. Countless individual cultures have utilized various types of drugs for pharmaceutical and religious reasons. Recovery.org found The Native American Church to be one of the most well known religions which use drugs to exercise their faith. The Native American Church uses a highly potent drug called peyote in certain ceremonies. An additional common religion that utilizes drugs for spiritual purposes is Hinduism, which has traditionally used cannabis to worship. Drug Policy Alliance asked the million dollar question begging to be answered in an article titled “A Brief History of the Drug War,”: why are some drugs legal while other drugs are prohibited? To provide readers with all-inclusive understanding, we must first understand the origin of the infamous War on Drugs.
In the 1960’s, around the time when bell-bottoms, lava lamps, and go-go boots were at their prime, drugs had become what Drug Policy Alliance calls, “...a symbol of youthful rebellion, social upheaval, and political dissent.” As drugs became increasingly frowned upon by parents and political figures, the American government was obligated to counter this “growing threat”. The first president to do so was former President Nixon; in June of 1971, Nixon officially declared what he called a “War on Drugs.” President Nixon swiftly took action by mandating a handful of new orders and policies. These orders included significantly expanding federal drug control bureaus, and administering policies such as the notorious mandatory sentencing. Nixon also strategically placed cannabis in Schedule One; this distinct classification of drug categorizes cannabis as high potential for abuse.
The year following Nixon’s series of changes, the commission recommended reversing Nixon’s decision to place cannabis in Schedule One. Instead, the commission held that the drug should be decriminalized for the possession and distribution of cannabis for personal use. This suggestion was entirely ignored by Nixon. This information leads us to revisit the initial question presented by Drug Policy Alliance; why are some drugs perfectly legal while others are strictly and heavily prohibited? Writers for Drug Policy Alliance summed it up perfectly, “It’s not based on any scientific assessment of the relevant risks of these drugs- but it has everything to do with who is associated with these drugs.”
The War on Drugs did not end with Nixon’s presidency, in fact, quite the opposite. Former President Ronald Reagan took office in 1981, where he chose to continue to carry out the plans of his predecessor. The first lady, Nancy Reagan, launched her own anti-drug campaign in which she created her well-known slogan, “Just Say No.” Mass hysteria surrounding the subject of illegal drug use was partly owed to the media, which consistently presented images and news of American citizens addicted to the free-base form of cocaine called “crack”. Nancy Reagan’s campaign pushed for “zero tolerance” programs which showed no mercy to individuals who had fallen victim to the highly addictive drug.
The rise of the war on drugs continued to increase. Los Angeles Police Department Daryl Gates established the renowned project D.A.R.E, which educated youth on drugs. Drug Policy Alliance stated that the program “... was quickly adopted nationwide despite the lack of evidence and effectiveness.” The result of the mass hysteria concerning drugs in our communities began to shift the way American’s perceived drugs. In the year of 1985, the amount of American citizens who thought drug abuse was the country's most important issue was estimated to be about two to six percent. Around four years later, the percent of Americans who thought drug abuse was the most crucial issue jumped to an astounding 64%. Congress viciously fed off the American hysteria, placing severely harsh penalties concerning drug use, trade, and distribution. Long after the hysteria subsided, the harsh penalties remained.
The War on Drugs was composed of anti-drug programs, excessively harsh laws, expansions of federal drug control agencies, doubling prison populations and endless anti-drug marketing. The War on Drugs founded by Nixon had lasted almost 50 years. After 50 years of advocating against drug use, the results are disheartening, to say the least. The Penal Reform Institution stated, “The enforcement of overly punitive laws for drug offenses has not only proven to be ineffective in curbing production, trafficking, and consumption of illicit substances, but had many negative consequences including overloading criminal justice systems, overwhelming courts, fueling prison overcrowding, and exasperating health problems.”
There were many faults to the War on Drugs project from its very inception. To begin, the prime reasoning behind the project’s launch stemmed from ill and discriminatory intentions. Nixon’s former domestic policy advisor, John Enrichman, later revealed Nixon’s hidden agenda in starting the War on Drugs. “The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I’m saying? We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did.” You can find out more here.
The War on Drugs primarily focused on low-level offenders and drug users. This moved the government’s focus from removing actual offenders of organized crime. The project also failed to sentence drug users and dealers accordingly; there was minimal distinction between the possession of illegal drugs and trafficking. The War on Drugs project also provided an unfair disparity between crack and cocaine sentences. Penal Reform International concluded that the “...biggest contributing factors in the startling increase in incarceration in the U.S. is traceable to the arrest and imprisonment of poor people of color for non-violent and drug related offenses.”
Now that we’ve drawn an adequate illustration of the War on Drugs and its efficiency, this post will present some useful statistics to provide readers with full understanding. Writer for The Globe, David Case, wrote a commendable article titled “The War on Drugs: What Is It Good For?” which broke down the various aspects of the campaign and analyzed the results. From gathered statistics, Case estimated that the 50 year long war on drugs has cost the nation a whopping $2 trillion dollars, and calls the war “nearly still born.” As of 2013, almost 3 million people are incarcerated; equivalent to more than 1 in 5 of the planet’s prisoners. To provide readers with a better understanding of what this means, Case provided that the number of American inmates currently serving time for drug related charges surpassed the total U.S. prison population in the year of 1970.
The effects of the War on Drugs project caused a negative trickle-down effect that affected American neighborhoods, families, and taxpayers across the country. The World found, “Illicit trade has transformed neighborhoods- from Baltimore to Detroit to East L.A.- into battle zones where innocent citizens live in fear of violence and shady dealers.”
Not only this, the plans specifically designed to fuel the War on Drugs has proven to have failed or backfired. The project has not considerably affected the overall flow of drugs in America. In fact, the prohibition of drugs has consequently amplified the worldwide black market, which has been estimated to worth a whopping $300 million.
Furthermore, the War on Drugs has been identified as the leading cause behind the spike in crime. Jefferey A. Miron, A Harvard lecturer, explained how the outlawing of drugs ultimately forced the drug industry to move underground. Inevitably, this meant that sellers and buyers were unable to settle any possible disputes with legal action, leaving the individuals to rely on violence. Miron further conducted a study back in 2010 which concluded that full legalization of drugs in America has the potential to save taxpayers over $40 billion dollars each year. Taxing these drugs was also estimated to bring in over $40 billion dollars in revenue, meaning changing our drug policies could yield over $80 billion dollars in revenue each year.
The primary fuel behind the War on Drugs was to prevent drugs from invading our communities, and more specifically, harming our youth. Yet unfortunately, the project failed to keep the youth from obtaining and using drugs. A study conducted in 1975 found that approximately 40% of high school seniors across the nation reported having smoked cannabis in the past year. By the year 2012, the rate had dropped by a mere 4%, as around 36% of high school seniors reported that they had smoked cannabis within the past year.
Now that readers have a thorough understanding of the War on Drugs and its effects, which have appeared to be completely negative, I would love to present some of the positive effects the project has had on the nation. I sifted through an endless amount of websites searching for positive outcomes of the War on Drugs. Nonetheless, I failed to find any positive outcomes that could be scientifically/evidently supported. Counterpunch.org provided one of the funniest positive outcomes claiming, “Via programs like DARE, it has turned kids into drug informants who monitor their parents for the authorities.”
“The global war on drugs has failed, with devastating consequences for individuals and societies around the world,” concluded a June 2011 report published by the Global Commission on Drug Policy. The report noted that between 1998 and 2008, global consumption of opiates had increased 35%, cocaine 27%, and cannabis 8.5%.” -The Globe
So… what does this mean? Well, this means it's time to reverse the damage that has been done. It means it's time to restore our communities, amend drug policies, exonerated individuals who have fallen victim to these severe drug policies, and restore families. Public opinion has begun to substantially shift in favor of logical reforms that support health-based approaches to combating drug use.
Good news; the change has already begun. States across the country have already taken the first step by participating in marijuana reform. Many states have decriminalized cannabis, while others have legalized it all together. America has continued to take progressive steps; dozens of states have passed legislation in order to increase access to the overdose antidote, naloxone, in efforts to fight the overdose epidemic. Drug Policy Alliance has compelled the government to support drug policy reforms, and has successfully brought about major change. On November 3, 2020, the state of Oregon passed Measure 110, becoming the first state in American history to decriminalize all drugs. This created a significant shift in American support in favor of treating addiction with a health based approach rather than a punitive approach.
There you have it Chatters. This blog post has provided you with the full history of the War on Drugs (sparing you the painful details), with supportive evidence, a birds-eye view of where we are today, and what all of this information means. Personally, I’ve always found the War on Drugs and its effects especially intriguing. Therefore, I hope you enjoyed this blog post half as much as I enjoyed creating it for you. That brings us to our final quote:
“There's a phrase, "the elephant in the living room", which purports to describe what it's like to live with a drug addict, an alcoholic, an abuser. People outside such relationships will sometimes ask, "How could you let such a business go on for so many years? Didn't you see the elephant in the living room?" And it's so hard for anyone living in a more normal situation to understand the answer that comes closest to the truth; "I'm sorry, but it was there when I moved in. I didn't know it was an elephant; I thought it was part of the furniture." There comes an aha-moment for some folks - the lucky ones - when they suddenly recognize the difference.” -Stephen King
Until next time,
Chelsey Chats.

Dirty Heads, 311, The Interrupters, and more at DTE Energy Music Theatre was a foggy Michigan evening.
No, not actual fog. Fog machines, vape pens, weed, all filled DTE Energy Music Theatre on a very warm, very humid Friday July 5th. Co-headling their summer tour Dirty Heads and 311 alongside friends in The Interrupters and The Dreamers to DTE Energy Music Theatre in Clarkston, Michigan.
I arrived at DTE to scoop my ticket about 20 minutes before doors so I can get a little hydrated and collect my thoughts before my 2nd DTE show this summer. Dirty Heads copped me a great ticket and a photo pass to give you my first hand account of the gig. I appreciate it fellas! I've been jamming these dudes for years and am stoked to get a shot at photographing and experiencing a great set.
As for 311, this is a band who went massive the year I was in 6th grade, 1994. They have come and gone through the years but I will always listen to this band. I will straight up be in the old folks home listening to 311, Dirty Heads, and The Interrupters, no doubt about it.
As for The Interrupters, they have been touring and putting out music like creative ska punk machines for years. I was lucky enough to photograph them at Warped Detroit 2016 on one of the small stages so to be able to get them at a huge amphitheater show is such a fucking gift to me. Been behind this band for 5 years now. Nothing but admiration and love to them while taking inspiration and letting go of negative energy every time I hear their records.
So sitting around waiting to get escorted for the first band and I have come to a massive realization, I fucking forgot bug spray. Its 90 degrees in the sticks in Michigan. I've done some stupid shit in my life but this is already proving to be some of the dumbest shit ever. Mosquitoes are already making breakfast, lunch, and dinner out of me. Some are going for seconds.
4 piece funky reggae with a hand drummer Bikini Trill started things off groovy and chill. Melodic and beautiful vocals work perfectly with their late afternoon vibes. It's almost as if I need to be falling off a dinosaur floaty trying to pass a joint to a friend in a kangaroo floaty.
We didn't even go back to the normal media hangout area as Bikini Trill only played a couple more songs before they were taking their gear off stage and the fellas in DREAMERS were getting their setup ready.
The breeze is starting to finally come in but I fear a wild storm coming our way. It almost feels inevitable. 6 weeks ago I was here and I heard sirens through multiple cities on the way up Telegraph Ave. I don't have that same deep emotion of impending doom gripping my anxieties.
Dreamers are a completely different vibe. Leaning more towards indie or lighter alternative than reggae at all. At the core of this band is amazing songwriting and with that their third song was a debut live performance of "Take Me Home".
LA's The Interrupters amped up the energy with California Ska Punk that can easily grip a hold of you and make you a fan for life. I know this because it happened to me years ago. The Bivona bros create the perfect soundscape to match their lady leader Aimee Interrupter.
Walking down the amphitheater steps there is a countdown til 311’s set time. At the 5 minute mark smoke starts bellowing out of fog machines on either side of the stage. Once the countdown was up the band walked out on stage to a roaring applause. If you're a pothead and love 311 your goal should be as elevated as these dudes are when they play. I had to sneak a few vape hits in during All Mixed Up, its legal in Michigan ya squares don't freak out. PNut is such an absolute beast on bass and Chad Sextons complex drum beats lift their rhythm section higher than their strains of cannabis.
What an amazing display from this great group of dudes in Dirty Heads. They were so on point that it was hard to keep my concentration on shooting. It happens sometimes. Mostly when artists walk out and command the crowd from the moment their set starts. I’ve never had the privilege of seeing them live before either which adds to the whole experience. To be in a massive amphitheater that is near to my heart, and see more and more bands and artists here, it’s easy to stand here and be grateful. If you get a chance to check out any of these 5 groups live, I highly suggest it.

Heal the soil and we heal the sick. Cannabis Natural Farming is much more than just growing the highest quality medicine. Every time we heal the soil with our IMOs we heal the people. Every time we use our soil to grow food for ourselves, our employees, our patients, we heal the people. We are much bigger than what the mainstream media calls us as some “pot” growers. We are stewards of the land. It all starts with the ground beneath our feet. Once you value your Time ⌚️you realize to have anything less than an authentic love, genuine relationships (friendships & more), solid business relationships, and happiness is a waste of Life! I made sure to schedule enough time between outbound cold calls for Website partner, team meetings, @google meets, and finishing touches on a Cannabis partnership @mzgoodbuzz24.7 to read this 📚. ##Shoptimism by Lee Eisenberg is a good read. 📕📙📙📉📈📊 This is by far one of the best books I have read that really dives into the American consumer mind. It helps us understand the sell side and the buy side. He calls the sell side, “Them versus You” because from a shopping stand point the perspective is, “we want goods because we're being forced to want goods.” Many times we are not looking to buy a particular product but it is presented to us in person, social media, commercials, news, by friends or family etc. Eisenberg calls the buy side, “You versus You.” This one seems to be the most dangerous one of all in my personal opinion. Reason being is we are “our” worst enemy and that can lead to making unwise spending decisions. We spend even if the economy is in the rocks. We make most of our decisions based on emotions, sometimes perception, and appearance. Our emotions play a huge role in the products we buy. If we are feeling happy or sad we may buy comfort food like apple pie to give us satisfaction. The other side is if we are feeling confident and proud, we may buy clothing outfits that express our body confidence. Appearance also plays a factor in our consuming decisions. If something is flattering catching our eye and attention we tend to buy it. Especially if the quality is high-end. This is engaging, entertaining and very analytical on all the data he has gathered to study the American consumer. I highly recommend this book, very authentic and truthful. The perspective may be a little (dated, Pre Coronavirus and current economy) but still makes some valid points!! Enjoy your Day. And Be Happy while 💨💨🌤#pushyourcloud #advertising #digitalstrategy #salesandmarketingexpert #closer #hardcorecloser #consumerdata #dataanalytics #kpis #revenue (at Downtown Detroit) https://www.instagram.com/p/CXMg2a2vgEc/?utm_medium=tumblr

JD, who wrote that nonsense? One of Obama's campaign promises was to renegotiate trade deals (WTO specifically). Libs knew it long ago that WTO didn't do any good any more. China has been a bad actor for decades. Promising and delivering are two different things though.
That’s from Independent
The Independent is a British online newspaper.[2] Established in 1986 as an independent national morning newspaper published in London, it was controlled by Tony O'Reilly's Independent News & Media from 1997 until it was sold to Russian oligarch Alexander Lebedev in 2010.[3] The last printed edition of The Independent was published on Saturday 26 March 2016, leaving only its digital editions.[2]
Nicknamed the Indy, it began as a broadsheet, but changed to tabloid (compact) format in 2003.[4] Until September 2011, the paper described itself on the banner at the top of every newspaper as "free from party political bias, free from proprietorial influence".[5] It tends to take a pro-market stance on economic issues.[6]
The daily edition was named National Newspaper of the Year at the 2004 British Press Awards.
In June 2015, it had an average daily circulation of just below 58,000, 85 per cent down from its 1990 peak, while the Sunday edition had a circulation of just over 97,000.[7][2]
Political views[edit]
When the paper was established in 1986, the founders intended its political stance to reflect the centre of the British political spectrum and thought that it would attract readers primarily from The Times and The Daily Telegraph. It has been seen as leaning to the left, making it more a competitor to The Guardian, although both also feature conservative columnists. The Independent tends to take a classical liberal, pro-market stance on economic issues.[6] In an editorial on 27 January 2013, the Independent on Sunday referred to itself as a "proudly liberal newspaper".[39]
The paper took a strong editorial position against the 2003 Invasion of Iraq, the Iraq War, and aspects of US and UK foreign policy related to the War on Terrorism following the 11 September attacks. It has been a strong supporter of electoral reform.[40] The paper has also taken strong positions on environmental issues, campaigned against the introduction of ID cards, and campaigned against the restriction of mass immigration to the UK. In 1997, The Independent on Sunday launched a campaign for the decriminalisation of cannabis. Ten years later, it reversed itself, claiming that the cannabis strain "skunk" "smoked by the majority of young Britons" in 2007 had become "25 times stronger than resin sold a decade ago".[41] In addition, The Independent has highlighted what it refers to as "war crimes" being committed by pro-government forces in the Darfur region of Sudan.[42]
Originally, it avoided royal stories, Whittam Smith later saying he thought the British press was "unduly besotted" with the Royal Family and that a newspaper could "manage without" stories about the monarchy.[43
There it is they are a lefty paper! Scare tactics, the sky is falling! Don’t buy this folk, it’s a lie, everybody in America wanted this, our factories have gone overseas using tax breaks, unfair labor practices, while Detroit is now becoming farmland. Ohio factories sit empty. Remeber look for the union label song, gone. My dad was operating engineers teamsters union local 825, it was drilled into my head. Unions were put in place for fair labor practices, to do away with sweat shops, slavery. Can China say they practice this? No, they impose tariffs on us, but they have set this up to one day be able to say we no longer need your business, now pay up!
I agree if he rally’s this, he will be a hero, Mexico already ready to talk negotiations on NFTA, good that needs restructuring.
Thank you anon

I was late to Underoath but it was one of my favorite sets in years...
I worked a decent amount at the day job but by the time I got home, it was like the wind got taken out of me. I had planned on getting to The Fillmore Detroit early enough to catch Stray From The Path as I am a fan. I at the very least wanted to get there to see Bad Omens as their new material is really something I think everyone should check out. Instead of coming home, knocking out a few pre-show things, you know a shower, camera bag check, smoke an absolute shit ton of weed, maybe slam a beer or make a mixed drink, maybe throw-up from the anxiety who knows. I came home and took a fucking nap like an old man that I am slowly becoming.
I walked past Mom’s Spaghetti and thought “I’m getting you tomorrow when I’m back here for my 2nd show in a row at the Fillmore.” Now I was let through GA and was treated just fine. The next night with Mom’s Spag on my mind, I would get treated a lot differently at the VIP entrance. Wild times we’re living in. I know people have an issue with the media, but I’m a fucking music photographer and writer. Like, I’m not breaking news here. I’m getting higher than Mt Everest on legal cannabis and documenting some of the best bands in the world and I’m doing it my way. It’s been a blast. So I was under the impression that we were done with masks completely but I guess not. I thought this because the venues dropped needing to see vaccination cards and negative tests for the unvaxxed. Nothing was told to me about wearing a mask in the photo pit. I walked by several security guards and stood in the pit for like 5 minutes before someone came and said anything to me about it. They were cool with it since I had one. But yeah, there’s a miscommunication there.
Underoath has been taking chances this entire time. They were trying to submerge themselves in a world that was completely secular until all of a sudden these really grimey heavy raw bands started coming out of the Christian Hardcore scene. They started sounding more like Metallic Hardcore in the late 90s and all of a sudden these dudes who are my age were popping up on fliers for tours in clubs throughout Detroit. The first time I saw them was with Zao and Unearth and this is one of the most memorable shows of my life. During Unearth it seemed like every guy 300lbs and up got down to their underwear and took over the pit. How truly fucking sweaty. How truly fucking Detroit. Scantless. Yeah I spelled that right.
Amidst this is a bunch of weird Christian kids and for whatever reason, I gravitated immediately towards Aaron. I was a drummer in a band and I loved songwriting but was never the guy the bands I was in looked to for that shit. I could give them ideas and they would run with it. This gave way to me finding production and doing dozen-plus side projects and aliases as a producer and DJ. So imagine a few blocks over in a basement that just recently had a video showing the venue above almost caving in, that’s where I cut my teeth. That’s where the lyrics to “When The Sun Sleeps” and “Alone In December” first were on my teeth, ha. I think The Underwater and Dead Poetic were the other bands on that tour. Pretty sure it was the Solid State Tour. I saw them again later that year at the same venue but that show is a massive blur. Throwdown… Eighteen Visions… and Terror. Yeah, dude. What the fuck were they doing on this bill? lol.
The venue is jammed and I feel pretty old I’m not gonna lie but I also feel very comfortable. A single LED masked human comes to the front of the stage and an ominous text-to-speech voice comes through the PA. Then the lights went out and the band came out to rip through the first song… “Damn Excuses” is the opener for the new record Voyeurist. Unbelievable energy right out the gate and well, Chris is already losing his shit behind the electronics. Grant has almost slammed his bass into my face like 3 times and James is going off. On this one side of the stage, I have these three guys just slaying. This band is one that gets me to stop and enjoy it with my own eyes and not through the viewfinder or the screen of a camera or phone.
By the time I get to shoot the other side of the stage and a little in the middle, they’re about ready to start with the next song. The photo pit has a lot of photographers in it, and I’m glad so many have gotten access but there’s a lot. Like, a little too many maybe? I dunno. I’m just here to do my thing and not get in anyone’s way or be shitty to anyone. I try to duck and go around without even touching people. I try to be mindful of everything going on behind me by using the reflection off the screen of my camera. I have earplugs in not only to protect my hearing but to also be able to really hear what’s going on around me. I just try to be decent and professional. That’s all I can do.
The next tune up is also an album starter. This being “Breathing In A New Mentality” off of 2008’s Lost In The Sound Of Separation. This of course was the era that led to Aaron leaving Underoath for 5 years and the band to go on and record Disambiguation the only record of Underoath’s entire career to not have AG on there. Wild.
I’m not going to lie, I was expecting another first song from a different album to be the third track of the set but instead, it was “On My Teeth” which I still to this day think should’ve been the album opener for Erase Me. It fucking hits so hard. I am screaming while shooting and dodging photographers and crowd surfers, security pushing me out of the way, and a dude screaming about too many photographers while being 6’5 in the front row. Tsk tsk. As the song would end, all the lights would go out. I turned around and grabbed my gear and bolted out of the photo pit and directly upstairs to the mezzanine to get a few crowd shots but skipped the upper balcony deck. I sat in the corner and enjoyed the rest of the set which included the next song being off the fan-favorite They’re Only Chasing Safety followed by the first song off of Define the Great Line “In Regards to Myself” which woke me the fuck up. I am so proud of this band. They’ve gotten to a point where their discography is so deep that they can have a headline set that only has 3 songs off their biggest record. If they would’ve played a song off of Disambiguation I probably would’ve shit myself. They’re just so mature and they’ve perfected their sound and style that they can play music from all their different records with THIS lineup and still slap the crowd with the best Underoath performance I’ve at least ever seen. They nailed it. Thank you. It’s been a very long 20+ years and I’m stoked to have been there to experience it but also document it. No Mom’s Spaghetti! Still! FFS, Chris, get your shit together. There is no doubt this is only the first leg of this album cycle. I can only expect them to be back at least one more time in the next year or two. If you missed it, I’m sorry. And if you’re wondering why I am just now mentioning Spiritbox it’s because they tested positive for Covid the night before and we didn’t get to have them here. They will be in Grand Rapids playing the Upheaval Festival After Show and that’s their only headliner for 2022 in the US. So we got screwed double. We can make the drive but we will see what happens with Upheaval in the future. Maybe we end up there! Regardless what a massive bummer that I know we’re all just happy the band and crew are all doing well!
Here are the Underoath photos and collage!

BLM x EDM: A Moment to Appreciate Black Artists in Electronic Music
By Diana Lustig and Isiah Kurz, Kusheen Magazine
Only half-way in and 2020 is already turning out to be a mindfuck of a year. COVID-19 all but eliminated live music. The economy tanked all but a few essential industries. And systemic racism came to a head with the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and so many others. Yeah, 2020 has been a shit year by all counts.
But despite all of this, I am working hard — desperately hard — to find some hope. Even with the coronavirus shuttering venues and festivals, thousands of incredible artists provide livestreams to keep our spirits up. Even though the economy took a nosedive, it was funny to note that booze and cannabis are deemed “essential.” And even in the face of tyranny and police brutality, we have seen an entire globe rise up in stern rebuke calling for justice and equality.
Yes, 2020 is a hellstorm. But as they say: the mind is its own place, and in itself can make a hell of heaven.
In that same spirit, Kusheen wants to take a moment to appreciate and celebrate a few of the black artists that have contributed to EDM culture, while acknowledging the rich history of gay and black culture that has brought the electronic music scene to where it is today.
Honey Dijon
Honey Dijon is a mixologist extraordinaire—and I’m not talking about cocktails. It takes an adept DJ to blend Detroit house, Chicago jack and Euro electro into something as sweet and savor as a Honey Dijon mix.
Born Honey Redmond, Honey Dijon grew up in the south side of Chicago where she was mentored by such influential names as Derrick Carter, Mark Farina and Greenskeepers. Honey Dijon has since moved out of Chicago to split her time between New York and Berlin, Germany — sharing the best beats across the Atlantic and back.
“For me, house music has never just been about DJing and fashion has never been about clothing,” she says. “It’s always been about the possibility of a more beautiful life.”
Beyond her career as a DJ/Producer and fashion icon, Honey Dijon is also an activist advocate for trans rights and awareness, speaking from her own experience as a black trans woman in the dance music scene.
“The DJ world is still a boy’s club in a lot of ways,” Honey Dijon told the New York Times in 2013. “I’ve always wanted my talent to speak for itself. I didn’t want ‘black’ or ‘trans’ or any of it to speak for me. Now I am beginning to realize the importance of it because there is really hardly any visibility for black trans women.”
Green Velvet
Curtis Jones has gone by many names over the years: Cajmere, Geo Vogt, Half Pint, Curan Stone, Gino Vittori — and of course, Green Velvet.
Green Velvet is one of my favorite go-to artists. His sound is perfect for a house party with friends, sweating at the gym or driving too fast. He’s also an electro heavyweight who has put his time into the scene.
Way back when, Jones left a master’s degree in chemical engineering to focus entirely on a career in music. And while I’m not sure about his chemical engineering, I do know he has a talent for engineering music with a unique sound; from the punk-inspired track “Whatever” to the jocular song “Flash,” Green Velvet is always pushing creative tunes with creative lyrics.
12th Planet
Straight out of Los Angeles, John Christopher Dadzie (aka 12th Planet and Infiltrata) is an American dubstep producer who has collaborated with some of the biggest names in EDM, including Skream, Russo, Kill the Noise, Diplo, Datsik, Doctor P, and Skrillex. 12th Planet is so influential that some music critics credit him as one of the first ambassadors of dubstep in the United States. Rolling Stone even named him the “Los Angeles dubstep god.” And that he is. Thriving in the underground scene of Los Angeles where he, along with his label SMOG Records, have brought the British dubstep movement stateside.
If you’ve been to a big ticket festival like Coachella, Lollapalooza, EDC, Hard or Ultra, you’ve almost certainly seen him on the lineup — if not at one of his sets.
Carl Cox
Carl Cox is a legend if there ever was one. This British house and techno producer got his start at 15 working as a mobile DJ. Within a short time he was already well known for his uncommon talent of three-deck mixing.
Even when the music scene shifted over the years, Cox retained his techno sound, continuing to refine it and revive it in his own way. "Techno drives home somewhere," Carl Cox says. "It takes you to an element of surprise, not knowing where you're going. It's scary but wonderful at the same time."
After spending almost 40 years in the scene, Cox is still at it with an Ibiza residency and his own record label.
DJ Sliink
DJ Sliink is well-known in the Jersey club scene, a style of electronic music he describes as “this unique club music that’s for the inner city. I would describe it as clever, with vocal chops with a half beat, breaks from Baltimore, and crazy kicks.” Through Jersey club, Sliink met Skrillex who he collaborated with, even joining Skrillex’s label, OWSLA. But the collabs don’t stop there, check out Sliink collabing with Flosstradamus, Wale, Fetty Wap and Alexandar Smash, soundtracking Paris runway shows and spinning in London, Paris, Milan and Oslo.
If his high-energy blend of trap and hip-hop wasn’t hyphy enough, DJ Sliink takes his position in the scene one step further by being vocal about the lack of representation in the electronic music scene, calling on Spotify’s curator, Austin Kramer, to add more black artists to curated playlists and speaking out about racial inequality this week with Billboard.
Lotic
Lotic (J’Kerian Morgan) is another producer shaking up the scene — but this time, in Berlin. The Texas-born electronic artist is known for such tracks as “Hunted,” “Buy a Print,” and “Heterocetera.”
Lotic admits never really vibing with American culture, so after completing a degree in electronic music production at University of Texas, they moved to Berlin to find like-minded artists. But, as is the case with most visionaries, Lotic started bucking the normal club sound to create something more personal, vulnerable and new; especially as it relates to their identity as trans and black.
“Anything I’m afraid of I’m putting it on the record,” Lotic said in an interview with The Fader. “I did a lot of crazy emotional work in the process of writing.”
Visibility Matters
We’ve undoubtedly missed some of your favorite artists and failed to mention a number of amazing producers. Which is why we encourage you to let us know your favorite artists via Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. We’ll add your recommendations to our Kusheen playlist.
Finally, remember that the fight for black rights and against police brutality is ongoing. Use whatever means are in your power to combat white supremacy including (but not limited to) protesting, social media, calling your local politicians, voting, donating, supporting black-owned businesses, educating yourself, and of course — using the power of music to change hearts and mind.
Black Lives Matter. Black Dreams Matter. Black Visibility Matters.

In Which I Get Stoned And Bitch About Work
Yesterday I worked for nine hours checking patients in with a weird system we had to make up on the fly due to the large number of people who came early and kept coming for seven straight hours. I ran hundreds (literally) of people through a software system and set of procedures I never got a full training in and could only practice with twice.
It was really really hard. And it wasn’t as fun as it was half a decade ago, the energy and the excitement and the teamwork. I stood directly behind the CEO for the media focused ribbon cutting. I welcomed hundreds of excited, mostly happy people into a brand new, gorgeous facility with flashy displays and top quality product.
I have been through this sort of experience so many times. So many iPhone and iPad and every other Apple product launches. I’ve clapped in guests and had little chats to make each quick transaction a bit more enjoyable for both of us. I’ve swapped stories with coworkers, joked around with managers who feel accessible, gotten frustrated and got mouthy for a minute about the inevitable mismanagement and poor planning for big turnout. For god’s sake, I’ve literally been photographed with and chatted with the CEOs of BOTH companies. And F****** is small now but... in a year, you’ll all be smoking their shit and a lot of you will be visiting them for medical and recreational. They’ll create more local jobs. They’ll be a leader in Michigan cannabis.
But I’m not the same person I used to be. I know so much more now. I know how shitty their consideration for their bottom rung employees is. Which really really matters when you watch THOSE employees literally building the guts of this business. Painstakingly unboxing, pricing, properly labeling, stocking, and creating displays of each and every product - and it’s medical weed so like let’s not forget that this is a process that you HAVE to pay attention to and be careful about.
It matters when you see a team stretched way too thin because it’s way too small, learning so much in such a short time (maybe that’s just me though honestly... I did learn two jobs instead of one, and I started at least a week after everyone else who got hired around the same time).
When there were still five or six hours left of the business day, I was informed we’d already done $20,000 in business since we opened that morning.
Twenty. Thousand. Dollars.
Not even a full day’s total.
And I get one half hour lunch for an 8 hour shift, no benefits, and I don’t even get time and a half pay for holidays unless I go full time.
I have to cap my hours at 17 a week because if I work more I’ll lose my medicaid and both my doctors expect to see me every three months and my meds cost money. I have to schedule another upper endoscopy, do you want to guess how much that would cost out of pocket, with the scope, the anesthesia, the gastroenterologist’s read of the scan and the after appointment, etc etc?? I don’t.
The Corporate team was swarming yesterday. Most of them didn’t even acknowledge us. Most of the people who did treated us with the unintentional condescension of people who feel they’re inherently better, smarter, and more deserving than you. They don’t mean to. They think they’re being kind.
But at the end of the day, they make annual salaries with solid benefit and possibly bonus packages, and you make an hourly rate higher than min wage but not even close to what you deserve considering you MAKE the company work. I mean, jesus, almost all the positive reviews I’ve seen so far specifically mention the great customer service/awesome employees. And yet, even with such disparity, they tried to cut our discount. There was an actual hours long discussion two days before grand open when Corporate wanted to cut our employee discount (for legal med patients working there) to almost nothing. They openly tried to take back a discount policy we ALL knew about, so they could charge US more despite working for the company. And we’re not a shady hole in the wall op in some creepy spot in Detroit that has dirty carts for half the usual price. This is higher end shit, and we’re the only game in town so prices can kind of be set with some flagrancy. Why would you want to make money off your employees who are not even getting what they deserve to begin with? How can you want MORE???
I’m not trying to shit on this place, really. With the company headquarters setting up in the same building, the growth plans of the company as a whole, and the potential doors this could open for me in the field of legal cannabis, this job is still a great opportunity. I’m learning a lot and after years out of the loop, it’s kind of nice to have a “real job” again. The team working on site are all nice and fun and pretty chill. I like and feel comfortable with everyone on the management team, but I also know I can’t get away with bullshit callouts with them so I have to practice the choice of either sucking it up and getting out of bed or making peace with potentially losing my job in a bad way. Those external consequences are the only things I can respond to anymore. It feels terrible and I’m still a miserable mass of depression, but.. I’m getting out of bed. 🤷🏻♀️
As usual, I got pretty far off track. My original point was, I think, that.. I miss my innocent days. I miss when I was 23 (hell, when I was 26, 27) and didn’t understand the evil of corporations or the exploitation of the workforce. I miss the days when I felt excited to be making almost $XX an hour because I’d never made more than that and it was a few bucks over minimum wage and I got really good insurance for not too much of my paycheck. I miss feeling like I mattered. I miss being ignorant enough to believe that anyone cared about me, that anyone could see how much I had to give and how smart and capable I was even if I also was sick more days than average. That I wasn’t just disposable chattel to make money for the people at the top and their investors. I miss living in the delusion that we were a family. It was a really powerful motivator, honestly. When you believe The Boss cares about you, is on the same team you are, is paying you a fair wage... when you don’t understand how bullshit that is.. Work feels a lot more bearable, I guess.
Yesterday I made it through nine chaotic, messy, Learn As You Go and Make It Work, non-stop, exhausting hours. I still have my job, and I intend to keep it for as long as possible. But I’ve also been forced to see just how much I’ve changed over the last decade. I’ve learned and seen and experienced so much that has affected how I see money, work, the world, being alive at all. I don’t think I can ever be enchanted anymore. I can’t be magicked into believing a dumpster of garbage is a treasure chest ever again. And as much as it matters to me to know the truth... I was a lot happier when I still saw a treasure chest instead of a rotting pile of trash. It’s just not as inspiring, you know?
